The Medical Publishing Insights and Practices (MPIP) Initiative was founded in 2008 by members of the pharmaceutical industry and the International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP). Current corporate co-sponsors include Amgen, AstraZeneca, Biogen, Bristol-Myers Squibb, GlaxoSmithKline, Janssen Research & Development LLC, Merck, Pfizer, and Takeda. MPIP receives logistical support from Navigant Consulting LLC, a life sciences strategy consulting firm.

UMC was established in 1978 to support the WHO Programme for International Drug Monitoring. This started life as a global response to the thalidomide tragedy. The purpose was to collect information about the adverse effects of medicines from as many sources as possible across the world, to ensure that the first signs of possible danger from medicines would not be missed.
